SMITH STARTS CAREER OFF IN FINE STYLE

Saturday 7th October 2006

Old Brodleians 5 - 31 Wibsey

Wibsey welcomed two new players in to the seconds on Saturday, Ryan McHale and Scott Smith. Ryan had an excellent game on the wing and Scott crowned his debut with a hat-trick of tries.

Wibsey travelled minus a prop and were encouraged when Old Brods sportingly loaned them a key player to help avoid uncontested scrums. Although Wibsey lost the toss and were selected to play down hill in the first half, the good field play from the forwards created space for the backs to run and score 4 of their 5 tries. Wibsey dominated both halves and only conceded a try through a pressured miss kick. Wibsey’s two other tries were scored by Liam Precious and Tim Bull, on a rare appearance. James Sawyer slotted over three conversions

2nd XV KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY

Saturday 18th February 2006

Wibsey II 44 - Knaresborough 0

The 2nds got back to winning ways this weekend against Knaresborough. The home side lent 3 players to the opposition to start the game 15 a side, despite this Wibsey ran away with a victory with Flanker Andy White to the fore and Mickey Ball scoring his usual hat-trick, taking his tally up to 16 for the season.

John Paine added to the Father & Son playing in a game tally.

There was also a triple family Hall front row with Jon and his son Richard propping and Jon’s brother Tim hooking.

SLICK ‘GATE USE OPEN SPACES

Saturday 4th February 2006

Harrogate Pythons II 47 - 5 Wibsey II

Playing on the wide open spaces of “Pitch One” at the County Ground, Wibsey were given a lesson in rugby by a far better team. The first half saw the home team use the wide open spaces well after drawing in the visiting forwards with good driving play. Wibsey battled hard but were their own worst enemies at times with poor discipline and basic errors handing the advantage to the home side.
An improved performance in the second half stopped it being a total rout, and they even managed a try from Wibsey’s best player of the day, Carl Walker, after intercepting a pass from 75 metres to go in under the posts, sadly the flying winger was still tired as he took the conversion and did a “Don Fox”

BRODS TOO STRONG FOR REDUCED TEAM

Saturday 28th January 2006
Wibsey II 12 - Old Brods IV 42ish

With only 12 players, the seconds had to loan two Brods players to play 14 a-side up on Beldon Lane, but still struggled. Playing uphill, the hosts struggled against it to stem the flow of points, but in the second half down the hill Wibsey managed two tries from Matt Hartley and James Sawyer, with a conversion by Liam Precious. TODD RUNS THE SHOW

  Saturday 14th January 2006

Wibsey II 19 – 14 Harrogate Pythons II

A close game on Beldon Lane saw the 2nds hold on for a victory despite late pressure from Pythons.

Playing downhill first Wibsey played a fairly open game which saw the home side keep Pythons on the backfoot. Fly half Liam Precious made a solid start with veteran Andy Todd outside him to help him along. As the home team edged closer to the Pythons line Todd took a quick tap then drew the visitors defence before feeding winger Dan Horsfall who scored in the corner. Liam Precious made a complete hash of the conversion from the touchline. 5 – 0

Wibsey kept up the pressure, and again Todd made the inroad with a dummy then passing back inside to Liam Precious who scored under the posts for a converted try. 12 – 0

The second half saw the tables turned with the visitors always looking dangerous, the Wibsey players who looked strong and confident ball in hand were now struggling to cope with the Pythons pace and power, the home side seemed unsure of their ability as their opponents came charging at them.

A Wibsey knock-on saw the Pythons gather loose ball after home hesitation and score in the corner, a great touchline conversion followed. 12 – 7

The home side wouldn’t lie down though, with Precious off with a knee injury Todd took charge of the reins. A fine display of how to play “the hill” followed with Todd find touch with many a kick. The home side managed to gain some field position and Todd didn’t waste the chance with a great grubber through the defencive line which 48 year old veteran Micky Ball was quickest to get their to touch down at the posts, Todd converted. 19 – 7

Pythons came straight back though with the right winger again showing how to run on to a ball and score at the posts. 19 – 14

A grandstand finish now loomed but the resolute home side held on with some fine team defence and kicking by Todd. FT 19 – 14

Both teams will look forward to Wibsey travelling up to Harrogate for the return after two good games between the sides already this season.

CLECKHEATON TOO STRONG

 Saturday 07th January 2006

Wibsey II 0 – 49 Cleckheaton IV

Wibsey’s 2nd string proved no match for a strong Cleckheaton 4th’s on Northfield Rd. The visitors played a loose open game which Wibsey didn’t have an answer to. The Cleckheaton Fly half pulled the strings all afternoon passing and then making himself available to link up the second phase, and despite some excellent tackling by the Wibsey team in which some of the youngsters showed up well, the attackers making the ball available and off-loading superbly always made a Cleckheaton score likely.

Wibsey’s cause wasn’t helped with Skipper Tim Bull leaving the field within the first 5 minutes with shoulder ligament damage. Unfortunately he wasn’t the first to suffer an injury with scrum half James Sawyer and Richard Hall both having to leave the field with leg injuries, leaving the Green and Reds with only 13 players on the field.

Wibsey battled hard despite their disadvantage with the pack playing well when undermanned and debutant fullback Steffan Goodhall tackling bravely all afternoon. FT 0 - 49

BELDON RUN CONTINUES

Saturday 26th November 2005

Wibsey 2nd XV 22 - Bradford Salem 3rd XV 5

The second team continued their good run with a fine win over neighbours Salem in a closely contested match. Playing up hill in the first half it looked as though it would be a tough afternoon for the home side as the visitors took the ball from the kick off and dove fully thirty yards down field. This was a wake up call however and Wibsey quickly improved although Tim Hall was looking a bit rusty at hooker in his first outing of the season and a rather scrappy home feed at a scrum saw the ball shoot out for the visiting flanker to pick up and score an unconverted try. Crucially however Wibsey managed to repel further visiting attacks and made a number of forays into the visitors half to turn around only 5 - 0 down.

The second half saw Wibsey turn the heat up on the visitors with good tactical kicking from Todd at stand off and strong running from Ball and Haddock in the centres. The pack were also starting to get the better of their opposites. It was no surprise therefore when good handling led to Mickey Ball scoring wide out on the left, Todd was unable to covert. It was not long though before more good work saw the villagers score two more unconverted tries, both through the prolific Mickey Ball. Wibsey's final try came when Taylor worked the blind side from a ruck for Richard 'Jerry the Berry' Hall to power over in the corner, this time Todd managed to land the conversion. FT 22 - 5

SECONDS PERSEVERE ON BELDON

Wibsey II 14 - Harrogate Pythons II 10

Saturday 19 November 2005

Wibsey’s 2nd XV had another win on Beldon Lane in their first fixture with Harrogate Pythons. Playing up the slope first the home side did well against a good side who played a very open style but poor handling by the visitors costing them a few times when they seemed to be set to cause problems. ‘Gate managed to score two unconverted tries, but crucially Wibsey scored one up the hill through Flanker Tim Bull after Mickey Ball went close, the centre had spurned the chance to pass to better placed team-mates but Bull bailed him out by driving over from close range. John Taylor converted a fine kick. HT 7 – 10

The 2nd half saw the Pythons surprisingly take the game to Wibsey with the visiting centre’s excellent side-step beating many a would-be Wibsey tackler. Both teams were cancelling each other out, the home side then put young Jimmy Birkbeck onto the flank moving Bull to prop to give the pack more mobility. This move proved a real highlight as Bull then received his 'wings!!' The soft southern w****r immediately asking to be replaced, but the front row replacements were not able to play due to injuring their ribs while laughing at his poor attempt at scrummaging. With around 15 minutes to go a period of Wibsey pressure began to pay dividends when Richard Hands drove over to score, Taylor again added the extra 2 points. FT 14 – 10
The two major high points were seeing Wafter last only 5 minutes up the hill before coming off, then throwing up after playing down hill, and another father and son playing partnership was formed when Paul and Danny Garside took the field together for the first time.

SECONDS FACED HARDER TEST

Wibsey 2nds 19 - Cleckheaton IV - 46

Saturday 12 November 2005

Wibsey arrived with no stand-off, no Richard Burton, no Carl the fireman, so with 14 men in all. Cleck were kind enough to lend us a hooker who was pretty good
Big Les took over from where Jacko left off by missing a conversion in front of the sticks
Panda was taken out by a sniper on the way to the field -- although he recovered well with a forward roll and adopted a fighting stance as he regained his feet...mainly to combat all the piss-taking that was taking place by his colleagues !! ..... the Cleck lot at the bottom of the hill breathed a communal sigh of relief when he recovered his balance.
Big Les' kicking is improving all the time...especially with all the practise we got !!
One such kick was such a teaser Panda even ran after it himself, moving with the agility of a gazelle ..... stunning the opposition , the crowd and even his own team-mates by leaping like a salmon to pluck the ball out of the air, regain his feet and bollock headlong into their biggest bloke.
Luckily he was still applauding the catch when 20 stone on the hoof collided with him and sent him sprawling onto his backside ... I am sure there was a tidal wave on the other side of the world as this "dwarf" hit the ground with such force ...
Mickey Ball at stand-off -- at least he kept the forwards warm by running back into them when ever the ball was spun out ... or  with a bit of variety, by clearing our lines with a 50 yard kick that had no intention of ever reaching touch, just so we can keep warm by chasing after it
Toddy best watch out ......
Forwards in second half stuck to their task well, winning scrums and beginning to dominate them by driving on after winning the ball, and rolling mauls and 2nd phase drives began to make yardage -- which resulted in the 2 forwards tries
Sterling defensive work by all the team kept the score down in the second half, again Mickey Ball cropping up in the middle of mauls to pinch the ball from opposition props who obviously thought that they could easily brush aside this "bald headed old f****r" only to be taught never to underestimate "old f*****s"
Liam Metcalfe began in the centres "a-la-Wafter" but was soon "re-educated" to run closer to the pack and made some good yardage by doing so -- this is something to build on in training
Tim Bull was a centre -- his style of centre play being keep it up the jumper and drive in ..... unless he decided he was going to match Bally's prowess with his kicking boots and put a speculative 30 yard up + under ....(speculative not spectacular)
... then stood and watched as the ball landed and the opposition full-back ran back at us . He was suitably "encouraged" to "chase the F*****G ball"  by the pack .....
Some strange refereeing decisions, not least when Liam Precious collected a kick through on our 22m then scampered around the oncoming attackers and put in a splendid 50 yard kick into space, where only Linford Christie would have been able to deny him a try .. he made contact with the ball, took 5 steps then was taken out by one of their fat lads, we all stopped, Liam stopped chasing and the ref then waved play-on .... amazing
we enquired of the ref, indicating to him that if the bloke had been any later he would have been tackling Liam over the Christmas period but to no avail
down sides .. young Jerry sustained a shoulder injury within the first 5 mins, he continued only to get a crack in the ribs which resulted in him leaving the field in the first half. He courageously reappeared in the second half but was clearly carrying an injury
Big Les got a knock as well, he was seen rolling on his back looking as if he was stretching something -- I think Meat Pie needs to show him a better way to stretch off cos he looked more like a dog trying to get rid of fleas from his back or the infamous "Dying Rat" last seen performed in a pub by John Lofthouse
Overall Cleck were very good, their centre had a hat-trick inside the first half and after 15 mins I would have given up my "youth player privileges" if we could have kept the score below 100
but due to the fact we rallied so well, at full time it was ..... "back to the showers and lubricate me a juvenile"

SECONDS GET A HAT FULL

Wibsey 2nds 43 Old Otilensians 5

Saturday 05 November 2005

Excellent performance from the second team with the forty-somethings scoring five of the seven tries, Mickey Ball with his usual hat-trick, John Taylor popping-up wide out from fullback for a score in the corner, and 'Wafter' falling over the line from all of six inches. The other two tries were added by Liam Precious in the centre and four of the tries were converted by Andy Todd who's continual probing from stand off helped to open the way for some good handling in the backs. The forwards were led as usual by Panda at number eight who brought the best out of the entire pack. Big Les continues to improve at scrum half and there were good performances all round.

GAME CALLED OFF AGAIN !?!

Wibsey II v Skipton III

Sat 14 Oct 2005

Wibsey second XV continue their run of bad luck of fixtures not turning up, with the phone call from the Skipton team at 12pm match day due to too many cry offs, attempts were made for us to go in the spares pool but no teams near our skill level were found unfortunately.

Next week we may have a game away at Castleford III

Wibsey II v Castleford III

Sat 8 Oct 2005

Wibsey were well prepared for their first game of the season with everybody keen to get going, all was well until D day minus one when the phone call came through from Cass that their first team coach had left the club and taken several of their frst team players with him, as such the second team had to fill in the gaps, and some of the thirds got promoted to the seconds leaving too few to field a team to play us.

Hopefully next weeks game against Skipton III will have better luck.

AT LAST A FULL SIDE !?!

Old Rishworthians II 31 Wibsey II 0

Wibsey travelled with only 13 men and after borrowing a player played with 14 against 15.

Old Rish scored with the first play of the game but were then held at bay by the visitors who gradually came into the game without ever being able to break through the home defence despite considerable pressure in the home 22.

Old Rish then scored 3 late tries to give the half time score a lop-sided 26-0 look mainly due to the inability of the visiting pack to get to the breakdown fast enough.

The second half was played largely in the home half but despite some good movement in the backs, Wibsey were still unable to score and the only score in the half came through a break away by the home sides promising 17 year old winger.

Wibseys 40 somethings again held the side together with Steve Rose making yet another comeback on the wing, and there were also promising touches from youngsters Carl Walker and Dan Carr.
